A hematologist is a pathologist who specializes in the diagnosis, management and treatment of hematological diseases. From simple anemia that may be due to a lack of nutritional factors, hereditary diseases (such as Mediterranean anemia, familial spherocytosis), autoimmune diseases (idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura and other autoimmune thrombocytopenias or anemias), to blood neoplasms (acute and chronic leukemias, lymphomas, multiple myeloma, myeloproliferative neoplasms, myelodysplastic syndromes).
Important parts of the specialty of Hematology are Pregnancy Hematology, which concerns hematological disorders in pregnant women, as well as Coagulation Hematology, either regarding bleeding disorders or regarding hypercoagulability and thrombosis conditions, as well as the regulation of anticoagulant treatment.
The Hematologist's experience is valuable in investigating conditions with symptoms or laboratory findings from the blood, such as, for example, leukocytosis, relative lymphocytosis (the "reversal of the white blood cell type"), increased hematocrit, high platelet levels.
